Thanksgiving makes it officially 1 year but who’s counting.
People always ask: “What made you decide to be Vegan?” My reply: ALGORITHMS! (instagram mainly)
Then Facebook and Instagram just starts attacking you with those darn algorithms until your feed snowballs into an avalanche of Vegan Posts from activists, environmentalists, animal rights, etc..
I got sold (happily so) that eating meat was not only good for me but also the planet.
I started off substituting everything that I use to eat with Vegan versions of the same foods. Vegan sausage, vegan butter, vegan cheese, vegan chicken, vegan ground beef, lots of carbs and very little vegetables.
Beginning half of the year there were many times I ate meat. I gave myself some leeway due to travel, getting sick, or just a simple 1 meal out of the week pass. (I was in, but I wasn’t fully committed as you can see)
I wasn’t feeling more energy, I just felt the same, also I felt like giving up many times because I thought the choices were too limited.
Funny story, in June my non-vegan friend introduced me to Cowspiracy and told me literally “it will melt my face off” and yes it did.
It strengthened my resolve and pointed me towards being Vegan instead of Vegetarian. I was still hesitant to get rid of dairy as part of my diet because I’ve been consuming it for 35 YEARS and couldn’t imagine my life without it.
Then something happened, it was called “What the Health?” and “Forks over Knives”…….BOOM……..paradigm shift. Not only should I go Vegan, I should actually go Plant Based?!
My internal talk during this time:
Can’t knock it if I haven’t tried it. What’s it going to hurt? I can always go back to my old ways if I don’t like it, this will just be like another fitness challenge for me
Once I get sold LOGICALLY on an idea it’s easy for me to implement, no matter the cost or in this case the TASTE (so I thought).
Starting the second half of 2017 I had a renewed vision and goal for being Vegan. It wasn’t algorithms and a “just try it” mentality anymore. I was CONVINCED that this was pertinent to my health. I’ve also followed different social media personalities since then that broadened my horizon on Vegan recipes: Thriving on Plants, Jayce Lab, Avant-Garde Vegan
If you’ve read my 22 Day Plant Based Challenge post, you’d see that I jumped headfirst into a 22 day plant based diet.
I went from eating vegetarian foods like this:
(vegan sausage, diary chocolate shakes, cereals)
To eating fresh plant based foods:
My energy soared through the roof. Fitness recovery was lightening quick. You can read more about the results from my 22 Day Plant Based post.
I was so excited by the increased energy and results that I somewhat forcibly made my Mom and GF sit thru all 3 documentaries mentioned above. Not going to lie my goal was to brainwash them to eat plant based foods…….muahahaha…….I’m evil I know………and it worked! My GF is now 3-4 months into her Vegan journey. Go Tofu Go!
I’m 90% Plant Based with the occasional Tofu added in, I love Tofu and I love my Tofu (my hunnie’s nickname).
I still play basketball 3-4x times a week and lift 2-3x a week with no problems. I sleep every day around 12ish and wake up at 7:30am with no alarm clock. I DO NOT get sleepy during the day anymore, no matter how tired my body is. And I still have an amazing amount of energy for extracurricular activities (if you get my drift).
I’ve met Dr. Colin Campbell from the Netflix Documentary “Forks over Knives” and currently considering taking his Plant Based Certification Course.
I frequent and volunteer at Vegan Expos. Started a Vegan focused Blog, Youtube channel, and merchandising store…….I guess you can say I like this Veggie thingy. Try it out!
